Shawn Bruce is a photographer and cinematographer based in Brooklyn, New York. His work centers on the human experience by exploring equity, culture, and a strong sense of community. His earliest photographic inspiration comes from his father, who Shawn fondly remembers documenting every family outing throughout his childhood. Shawn grew up steeped in skateboarding culture and still engages closely with the community.

One of his earliest photo endeavors in New York City explored documenting nearly 100 culturally important locations around the city, many of which were featured prominently in notable skateboarding films and photos. You can find him at skateboarding events both locally and globally, when time allows. Shawn’s most recent project, a portrait series of 500 people, explores vulnerability, diversity of style, and the power of trust. The project was displayed as part of a month-long residency with Peak Design, and included a workshop open to the public to learn more about photographing strangers on the street.

More broadly, Shawn’s work centers on athletes, artists, and craftspeople, focusing on elements of consistency and practice behind each subject’s accomplishments. In his spare time, Shawn works on textile projects, including embroidery and garment making. He’s currently reveling in the nostalgia of his youth by rewatching the full series of the X-Files.
